Although the steering of a Cayuco can be done by the pacer position, steering is usually performed by the person sitting closest to the stern of the cayuco. In Cayuco Race, this person is popularly called "The Steer", and he or she is in charge of coordinating and maintaining the cayuco in the right direction.
