[edit] Fins used in Cayucos

According to CREBA Book of Rules, [cayuco]s competing in the Juvenile Category are not allowed to make use of any mechanical steering device such as a Rudder. However, competitors can attach any fixed device that can help to correct the direction of the boat. Usually, this correction can be made by fixing a piece of fiber glass, plastic, metal or wood near the stern of the cayuco.

Although the attachment of such device can significantly reduce its hull speed and the ability of the boat to glide in the water surface, it can help the Steer member of the team so that he spends more time paddling forward, preventing him to perform the more exhausting steering strokes.

Fins can also be used in the Open Category, where teams are allowed to attach ruddering devices to their cayucos. This combination (Rudder+Fin) can be useful in having extra control over the direction of the boat, but can also reduce its speed.
