Open Category

The former Patch Category has now become the Open Category. In this category all members of the team are over 21 years old, but they may include some younger members. Unlike its former predecesor, the Open Category has male, female and coed sub categories. Also also they have the right for trophies and medals, contrary to the now old Patch category, in which teams only paddled to get the explorer's Patch after having crossed the Panama Canal in the Ocean to Ocean event.

- One important difference with respect to the Juvenile Category is that in the Open Category, teams are allowed to install in the cayucos, mechanic steering devices also known as rudders.
- Because cayucos are allowed to have installed steering mechanisms, members of the Open female and male categories do not have the right for a Master Paddler Title. For more information, please consult CREBA's Book of Rules.
- Open Category teams are allowed to have more than 4 paddlers per boat, contrary to the 4 member restriction applied to teams in the Juvenile Category.
- In every Race Event, except for the Gamboa Regatta, the Open Category teams depart with a delay of 5 to 10 minutes, after the Juvenile Category has departed.
