The Balboa Paddle Club has organized teams that participate in Cayuco Race according to the age and gender of the participants. Based on age, there are two main groups: the Juvenile Category and the Open Category. Each of these is then sub divided according to gender in: Male, Female and Co-ed; making a total of six (6) categories in Cayuco Race.

For each Race Event, although crews from the same "age based" categories depart simultaneously, competition for the prizes takes place within teams of each of the six categories. For instance, all paddlers in the juvenile category depart at the same time but the juvenile male category teams do not compete for a trophy against the teams in the juvenile female or co-ed categories; neither they compete against the Open Male category teams.

Except for the Gamboa Rainforest Resort Cup, during regular Cayuco Race Events, all cayucos in the Juvenile Categories depart first and then, ten or five minutes later (depending on the length of the stretch), all cayucos in the Open categories take off.

[edit] CayucoPedia Facts

  • As the sharp reader may have observed, the use of the word category in this article is somewhat interchangeable. On one hand we have the main categories Juvenile and Open, and on the other hand we also have the Male, Female and Co-ed categories.

In common Cayuco Jargon, it is understood that paddlers only make the distinction of Male, Female and Co-ed categories when speaking of competitors for a trophy; and that paddlers or CREBA officials make use of the Open and Juvenile category terminology if they want to refer to the 3 "gender based categories" in each of the "age based categories" at once.
