Boat & Name History

In the middle of 2001, Mr. Jay Gibson convinced a young crew in search of a good boat to take their chances and build one. These kids chose two out of five raw boats that CREBA had in storage and took them to Gibson’s house in Gamboa. The construction began immediately and in January 2002 the two boats were in acceptable condition for training and travel. One of the boats was named Anacardium, the scientific name of the type of wood that it was made out of (Espave); the other boat was named after a river close to a famous surfing spot, Rio Teta.

The first season of the Anacardium was very rough because of the many tedious modifications that had to be done in order for the boat to be completely finished. It wasn’t until three weeks before the Ocean to Ocean race that the boat was completely ready. Up to that point, the Anacardium was known as a good boat and with great potential, but it wasn’t a favorite. To the surprise of many, the Anacardium came back and beat the favorite boat of that year, becoming the second boat in the history of the Ocean to Ocean Cayuco race to win first place in the same year it was built.
